One member of this group, the American burying beetle ( Nicrophorus americanus), is a federally threatened and state endangered species. There are about 30 species in the carrion beetle family in North America north of Mexico, some more common than others. ![]() The colors and shape vary according to species. In many species, the elytra are too short to cover the final 1 to 3 segments of the abdomen tip. Juvenile Carrion crows can be identified by their brownish plumage and blue eyes, both of which darken to black and brown as they grow older. The shell-like forewings (elytra) have a distinctive shape, wider toward the end of the body and narrower toward the front. The Carrion crow a medium-sized black bird with a green or purple sheen. Like those of other beetles, the larvae are grubs. Those in the carrion beetle family are flattened, usually black, often with markings of red, orange, or yellow. These beetles often secrete or spray foul-smelling substances, or just plain smell bad themselves. The antennae are distinctively clubbed, often with minute hairs or colors at the very tip.
